The Powhiri Process
WALT understand the Powhiriri Process. Here is my writing about it:
The Powhiri Process
When you go to a Marae you have to go through a Special Process. Back
Hundreds of Years ago New Zealand Also now known as Aotearoa
sometimes had some bad People who wanted to take the land off other
tribes or they were there for War. So the people from the marae sent out their
fastest warrior. They laid down either a special feather or a leaf. If the visitors
did not come in peace they did not pick up the Feather/Leaf. So the warriors
dashed back to the marae to tell the Leader/Chief the news if they were
coming in war or peace. It was called a wero but all of that happened a long
time ago nowadays they only do that for special occasions.

The second process is the karanga. It is basically just a call of Welcome.
The karanga is done by the women. It also means respect to people that
have passed away.

The 3rd and fourth/ Toru and Wha. The next thing that happens is called
the whaikorero. It is done by the men/host first. After that it is the guest’s
turn to do a speech. After each whaikorero the women and men do a Waiata.
After the Guest’s have done their Speech they do a Waiata to show Respect.

After that they do a Hongi. A Hongi is when you touch on tip of your noses to
show Respect. Then they have some delicious Kai.

That is The Powhiri Process.
